Train Travel
Train travel is a much more prevalent mode of transportation in Europe than it is in the United States. As a matter of fact, travel by train is a favorite for younger tourists who have a limited budget yet a month long vacation to explore the far ends of Europe and do not mind sharing a compartment with new and interesting people at many of the stops. Train travel is actually so popular with European travelers that it is not unusual for a travel agency to offer a train vacation package. These train vacations usually entail a certain number of guaranteed stops, a discounted ticket for the fare, and a detailed listing of accommodations that may be found along the way. Since those who do seek out train travel as their main mode of holiday transportation are by design a bit more adventurous than the average traveler, usually they will not take advantage of the travel agent’s offer to go ahead and make hotel reservations for them. After all, who knows where they will decide to get off the train and stay? Of course, considering that train travel in Europe is all but synonymous with train travel in Italy and a variety of other locations it is not surprising that the travelers do not want to commit themselves to one location. Instead, a photo opportunity might turn into an impromptu sightseeing adventure which might turn into an evening on the town and a night’s stay at a local hostel or hotel.
European train travel is not very expensive. Granted, you will still need to budget for this vacation, but considering that “western travel by train” vacation packages are offered via the main vacation retail outlets at oftentimes discounted prices, train travel is a most affordable way of seeing the continent.
Train travel in Europe does not have to be tantamount to train travel in Spain, however. As a matter of fact, Eastern Europe news show that train travel in those portions of the continent is also becoming more and more fashionable. A holiday train event may be hosted by some travel planners during the Christmas vacation when Eastern Europe train travel picks up considerably. While the cost is comparable to that of the Amtrak train travel schedule of fares, some marked differences in price may be experienced when traveling in the Eastern portions of Europe. Planning ahead is the best way of avoiding unpleasant surprises and language barriers.
